Introduction
RecOnPhone is a phone recording software. It runs under Windows 95, 98, Me, NT4, 2000, XP or later.
You can either recird through a modem or through a RecOnBox.
While in automatic mode, the software detects each incoming or out going phone call, it automatically records it and stops when the call is over. Audio recordings are compressed and stored in the hard drive. Listening is done with navigation buttons, you change from one record to another and also navigate within a record, going 5 or 30 seconds forward or backward .
The software can be made invisible to users while still running.Hardware setup
See the picture below. You may or may not have Phone 1. If you have this phone, use the dual jack adaptor. Plug the RecOnBox phone jack in the female phone jack. Plug the RecOnBox cylindrical mini jack (Ø 1/8" - 3,5mm) in the sound card microphone input (the pink input, or red , depending upon manufacturers).
See the picture below if you have a DSL modem and/or a voice fax/modem
Alternatively, you may also plug a microphone into the sound card instead of the RecOnBox, the software will then record ambient sounds.Software setup
a - Installation
b - Registrationa-Installation
The software is normally distributed through Internet. Click on the link provided and choose to execute the file (or save and execute later). This file may be named for example "rec25en.exe".If you got the file from a floppy disk, insert this disk in the floppy drive. Click on "Start" then "Run…". In the dialog box enter: a:\setup, then click OK.
b-Registration
The freeware version don't need registration. Only the full purchased software needs to be registered. You can do it online or ask for your authorization code by email.
First enter your license number.
Automatic internet registration : If you wish to register online, check your Internet connection and click the first "register button".
Manual registration : If you wish to register offline, you'll first have to request an authorization code by email. Then you'll have to enter it and click the second "register button".
Configuration
a - System configuration
b - Audio configuration
c - Email notification configuration
d - Caller Id configuration
e - Canceling and savingThe first time the software is run, it asks for configuration. Configuration has to be made and saved for the program to be used. The configuration window automatically shows at first time.
During the configuration process, be sure that no other software uses your sound card.
a-System configuration
![]()
Recording device
You may have more than one recording device listed (sound cards). Choose the recording device (sound card) to which RecOnBox is connected. You may install a second dedicated sound card for the RecOnBox only.
Playing device
Same as above. Choose the playing device (sound card) to which your listening speakers are connected.
Recording PCM format
This list contains all standard PCM formats compatible with your sound card. Choose: PCM – 8000 Hz; 16 bits; Mono.
8000 Hz is the sampling frequency, a higher frequency will not improve sound quality and data size will be larger.
16 bits is the sampling resolution, 8 bits is too low.
Mono stands for monophonic.Audio compression codec
An audio compression codec is an algorithm used for decreasing the size of audio data. The more it compresses the less the file size will be. MP3 is a famous codec. Too high compression may distort sound. Some codec may not allow easy forward and backward navigation during playback. The more the codec appears low in the list, the more it compresses. Choose either the first MP3 codec or IMA ADPCM or no compression at all. Bad ot too strong compression will distort the sound and may disturb DTMF decoding.
Average rate
Displays the codec compression performance in Megabyte per hour of audio data.
Running mode
Automatic run at startup : Allow RecOnPhone to be automatically launched at computer startup.
Default running mode : Choose the default visualization mode and whether RecOnPhone will be in record mode or not when launched.
Password : A password will secure the access to RecOnPhone. The password must have less than five alphabetic characters. By exception, the software will not check the password when automatically started "hidden - record" mode.
The software can't be run until the correct password is entered. Enter the password when you see this simple form on the left. Storage folder
You can choose the storage folder where will be stored the records. At first time, it's the RecOnPhone install folder. A child folder named « archive » is created for archive purpose.
Audio file protection
Changing the file extension of your recordings will prevent unaware users to read them directly from your disk drive.
Dialed digits (DTMF) decoding
This will enable the software to decode the dialed digits while playing the records.
Automatic recording
(Not available in the freeware version). This option allows automatic recording. If set, just click once the record button and the software will automatically start and stop the recording. If you choosed a "record" "default running mode" the software will either be in manual or automatic recording mode, depending on this setting.
To fine tune the the automatic detection process, you should click "assisted audio configuration". You may also adjust the RecOnBox recording settings.Windows recording Hot-key
Many RecOnPhone keyboard shortcuts exist. This one toggles recording. It will ever works, even if the RecOnPhone window is hidden, minimized or in the background.
b-Audio configuration
![]()
Assisted audio configuration (RecOnBox only)
You should first click this button and follow instructions. This will make all the needed configuration for automatic recording. Extra audio settings are for fine tuning only.
Thresholds (RecOnBox only)
These settings are used to control the automatic recording. The software will start recording when the audio level goes over the "record level threshold" for more than "record time threshold" milliseconds. Once it's recording, it won't stop until the audio level goes below the "stop level threshold" for more than "stop time threshold" milliseconds.
If you get unwanted cuts in your recordings, you may decrease the "stop level threshold". You may also increase the "stop time threshold" to 10000.Automatic audio mixer configuration (RecOnBox only)
With this box checked, the software will activate the mixer microphone input for recording and deactivate it for playing. Also, it will activate the microphone sensitivity setting.
If you don't wish this automatism, uncheck it. Then you'll have to use your own sound card software to adjust sensitivity, to enable microphone recording and to disable microphone playing to avoid echo effects with loudspeakers.Microphone sensitivity (RecOnBox only)
This slider adjusts the sensitivity of the sound card microphone input. If the recording level is too low or too high, use this setting. It will be deactivated if "Automatic audio mixer configuration" is unchecked.
Recording test
By clicking on the "Recording test" button you can test your configuration. It will work with a modem or the freeware version. Here's how it works in automatic recording mode :
Click on the button, the button text should turn to "waiting" and the frame should turn to green.
Pick up the phone, a blue bar within the view-meter shows the audio level. The view-meter frame color change from green to red when the recording level is too high. In this case lower the microphone sensitivity.
When the audio level goes over the "record level threshold" for more than "record time threshold" milliseconds, the button says : "recording".
It stays here until the audio level goes below the "stop level threshold", the button says : "recording low level".
If the audio level stays below the "stop level threshold" for more than "stop time threshold" milliseconds, the recording test stops.
c-Email notification configuration
Email notification will immediately send an email for each new recording and attach the recording itself within the email.
Configuration
The receiver's email adress should be valid, this is where the email will be sent. You may use many email adresses as long as you separate each one by a semi-colon ;
The sender's email adress is not of much importance.
The email subject is not of much importance.
The maximum email size will prevent the software from sending huge recordings through Internet. If the recording size is greater than that, the remaining part of the audio recording won't be sent.
Automatic SMTP configuration is the easy way to send emails. RecOnPhone will simulate a real SMTP server. However the mail recipient's admin may believe you're spamming and reject your email, in that case use your own SMTP server.
If you want to rely on your own SMTP server, uncheck "Automatic SMTP configuration" and enter your SMTP server adress.
If needed, try to connect to Internet ... : This option allows RecOnPhone to dial an Internet connection if no Internet connection is available. Beware that this dial-up connection will not be recorded as a new phone call for it will endlessly notify new recordings.
Test email sendingThis test will try to send an email with an attached audio file to the receiver's email adress.
d-Caller Id configuration
The Caller ID is a service from your telecom provider, you may request to receive the name and the phone number of the caller. You need a special device to decode it. RecOnPhone uses your modem for this decoding. This means that RecOnPhone won't get the caller Id without a modem regularly connected to the phone line. You may also receive additional messages, RecOnPhone doest not specifically handle them but they will appear in "raw caller id mode" informations.
Caller Id device
Choose the modem used for Caller ID decoding. It should be regularly connected to the phone line.
On new Caller Id informations
On a new phone call, RecOnPhone can either pop up itself or pop up a balloon over the windows task bar.
Use Tapi Caller Id Mode
This mode will rely on the Windows OS to fetch the caller id name and number. Sometimes Windows is not able to get them. Furthermore Windows don't get extra messages.
Use Raw Caller Id Mode
This mode will fetch all caller id informations, including extra messages. You may filter the messages you don't want to see.
Filter these infos : Add there all specific informations you don't want to see, each one separated by a semi-colon ;Test Caller ID
Click on this button and call yourself with another phone. All available caller id informations and messages should appear in the window below.
e-Canceling and saving
Cancel button quits configuration without saving changes.
Save button quits configuration after saving changes.
